It really started with me flipping through a cocktail book my friend had on her bar at home. It was written by two hipsters in New York City that had never been bartenders themselves. The 10 dashes of Angostura they called for in the Old Fashioned gave that away, but they admitted to it too.
"I could write a better book than this!"
A year later my book was slowly morphing into a reality. I was having a brainstorming session with my graphic designer, drinking warm beer in his hot print shop, when it occurred to me that the Friend of the Bartender could be more.
People in our industry have always been able to recognize our own. Certain orders at the bar are like a secret handshake, triggering the question:
"So where do you work at?"
Being industry is belonging to a culture. Whether you're behind the bar of a classy cocktail club or work with a pirate crew in a legendary local dive, we all live the polar opposite of what most people would consider "normal." And we love it.
So this one's for us and our favorite regulars. A uniform, a jersey for our team. An easy way to spot a Friend of the Bartender.
Cheers, chin-chin, salud, and sláinte!
